Iowa Quality Residence Program

Health care quality professionals play a critical role in improving outcomes, enhancing safety, and preventing harm. However, hospitals often face high turnover in these roles, leading to knowledge gaps when experienced quality leaders depart. The Iowa Quality Residency Program bridges that gap by equipping new quality leaders with the knowledge, tools, and peer support they need to succeed. This comprehensive two-year program features in-person learning sessions, coaching calls, assessments, and collaborative discussions designed to build a strong foundation in health care quality leadership.

The goals of the program are to:

Enhance critical thinking and data-driven decision-making
Help with the transition from novice to expert quality leader
Provide networking opportunities for quality leaders
Support professional development

Iowa Quality Residency Program Modules

This module will overview the program’s purpose and structure and define the roles and responsibilities of the participants. Collecting quality data is a step in the right direction but putting the data to use is the key to success. This session will help attendees understand their job descriptions and organizational strategic plans, juggle multiple hats and interact with differing levels of hospital staff.

This seminar is about a mindset, not a toolset. Attendees will learn to educate based on their organization’s culture and react appropriately when exploring quality and patient safety measures. As a result, employees will find significant opportunities for improvement that may otherwise remain hidden, needing far fewer root-cause analyses. The seminar instructor will also discuss more effective reporting formats.

Trying to figure decide quality measures need to be reported can be a complicated and confusing process, especially when combined with internal expectations to deliver meaningful information. In this session, attendees with learn about external national and state-related reporting requirements (e.g., Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Hospital Engagement Network and Medicare Beneficiary Quality Improvement Project). Attendees will also learn the how to apply those measures in their facilities and create measures useful to their organizations.
